The Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Padjadjaran has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 2:Zero Hunger). Melalui riset yang dipimpin oleh dosen dan berkolaborasi dengan mahasiswa, tim berhasil mengembangkan benih unggul dari tanaman sumber pewarna alami, seperti kunyit, bunga telang, dan ubi jalar. Penelitian ini tidak hanya berkontribusi pada ketahanan pangan, tetapi juga membuka peluang inovasi di sektor pertanian berkelanjutan. Kegiatan ini merupakan kelanjutan dari program hibah lima tahun yang mendapat dukungan perusahaan swasta internasional asal Amerika Serikat, Sensient Colors LLC.
This initiative stands as a clear example of translating academic knowledge into real-world solutions through collaboration between lecturers and students in the Crop Production Study Program. Over the past five years, the program has supported a range of strategic activities, including the International Summer Course and Breeding for Natural Color Plants. The collaboration extends beyond Unpad’s experts to include international partners, notably Dr. Vergel Concibido from Sensient Colors LLC. This partnership highlights the value of well-founded, rigorously tested research in yielding impactful and practical innovations.
The research focuses on developing plant varieties with superior natural dye properties as well as resistance to pests and diseases. Through selective breeding, the team has produced seeds that are more productive and efficient. These seeds have undergone rigorous trials and are expected to boost farmers’ incomes. Enhancing genetic resources in this way also supports the availability of high-quality, nutritious, and diverse food for communities which aligning directly with the goals of SDG 2.
The success of the first phase has laid a strong foundation for continuing this strategic partnership with Sensient. The second phase, running through 2029, reflects a shared commitment to driving innovation and advancing food security. This collaboration strengthens the Faculty’s position as an institution that goes beyond theory, delivering real-world impact with broad benefits for both society and industry.
