Since its inception, the Faculty of Agriculture has had a Development and Enhancement Plan in both physical and non-physical aspects. In terms of physical aspects, at the beginning of its establishment, the Secretariat of the Faculty of Agriculture at Padjadjaran University was located at Jl. Dipati Ukur No. 37, Bandung, while lectures and practical activities were scattered in various places and related institutions. In mid-1961, the Faculty of Agriculture moved to Jl. Maulana Yusuf No. 12, Bandung. In early 1968, activities were carried out at Jl. Bukit Dago Utara, together with the Faculty of Animal Husbandry. Finally, in September 1986, the Faculty of Agriculture moved to the Padjadjaran University campus in Jatinangor and has remained there since.

In 1962, the Faculty of Agriculture established an experimental garden located in Jelekong Village, Ciparay Sub-district, Bandung Regency, covering an area of 6.5 hectares for research and development activities in agriculture – later evolving into the Agricultural Research, Training, and Development Center (SPLPP) Ciparay. In 1980, the Faculty of Agriculture expanded its land area in Arjasari Village, Arjasari Sub-district, Bandung Regency, to 200 hectares. This was based on the Decree of the Governor/Head of the First Region of West Java Province No. 2093/Dit/PHT/HP/1980 regarding Approval of Location Permit and Land Use Certificate No. 02 Lebak Wangi dated July 10, 1980. The development land area to support academic activities in the Faculty of Agriculture is now known as SPLPP Arjasari.

The development of the physical aspect also includes improving the quantity and quality of facilities and infrastructure supporting academic activities. Currently, the Faculty of Agriculture has a building and classrooms (1,950 m2), laboratories (2,950 m2), internet access (capacity of 15,698 kbps for the entire faculty), a library (657 m2), and a Student Centre (250 m2). In the near future, it is expected that the Faculty of Agriculture will also have a three-story multimedia building integrated with a digital library.

Non-physical aspect development at the Faculty of Agriculture includes refining the curriculum and education system, as well as developing educational programs. Initially, the undergraduate curriculum at the Faculty of Agriculture followed an advancement system through majoring and minoring approaches for the completion of students’ final projects. The improvement of the undergraduate curriculum through the implementation of the Semester Credit System (SKS) was enforced starting in the academic year 1979/1980. Since the academic year 2008/2009, the Faculty of Agriculture has implemented a Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK) with a Student-Centered Learning (SCL) teaching approach.

Initial Development

Department

In line with the curriculum refinement, the education system at the Faculty of Agriculture has also been adjusted. Initially, undergraduate education at the Faculty of Agriculture was pursued through the Departments of Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Socioeconomics. However, since the academic year 1979/1980, undergraduate education has been pursued through:

  1. Department of Crop Cultivation
  2. Department of Soil Science
  3. Department of Plant Pests and Diseases
  4. Department of Fisheries
  5. Department of Agricultural Socioeconomics
  6. Department of Agricultural Technology

Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 217/DIKTI/Kep./1996, the management of undergraduate education programs at the Faculty of Agriculture is based on Study Programs (PS), namely:

  1. Agronomy Study Program
  2. Plant Breeding Study Program
  3. Soil Science Study Program
  4. Plant Pest and Disease Science Study Program
  5. Agricultural Socioeconomics Study Program
  6. Water Resources Management Study Program
  7. Food Technology Study Program
  8. Agricultural Engineering Study Program

The Agronomy Study Program and the Plant Breeding Study Program develop within the Department of Crop Cultivation.

Since the academic year 2006/2007, the Department of Agricultural Technology, along with its associated study programs, namely the Food Technology Study Program (PS Teknologi Pangan) and the Agricultural Engineering Study Program (PS Teknik Pertanian), evolved into the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and Industry. Approximately one year later, the Department of Fisheries, along with its managed Water Resources Management Study Program (PS Manajemen Sumber Daya Perairan), developed into the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences. The management of these two faculties became separate from the Faculty of Agriculture.

Facing the challenges of changing paradigms in the 20th century, the Directorate General of Higher Education (Ditjen Dikti) established the Higher Education Long Term Strategy (HELTS) 2003–2010 as a reference for the development of higher education, fundamentally covering policies for enhancing national competitiveness, organizational health, and autonomy. Responding to these conditions, the Faculty of Agriculture at Padjadjaran University, along with several other universities affiliated with the Indonesian Agricultural Higher Education Communication Forum (FKPTPI), developed a new curriculum for the advancement of agricultural higher education.

The policy of the Faculty of Agriculture to develop a new curriculum is essentially an implementation of the Minister of National Education’s Decision (Kepmen Diknas) No. 232/U/2000 concerning Guidelines for the Preparation of Higher Education Curricula and the Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes, as well as Kepmen Diknas No. 045/U/2002 regarding the Core Curriculum of Higher Education.

Based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education (SK Ditjen Dikti) No. 163/DIKTI/Kep/2007, since the academic year 2008/2009, the Faculty of Agriculture at Padjadjaran University has developed:

  1. Agrotechnology Study Program (restructuring of Agronomy Study Program, Plant Breeding Study Program, Soil Science Study Program, and Plant Pest and Disease Science Study Program)
  2. Agribusiness Study Program (restructuring of Agricultural Socioeconomics Study Program).
Both study programs implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (KBK) with a Student-Centered Learning (SCL) teaching approach.

Since its establishment, the development of educational programs at the Faculty of Agriculture has not been solely for the development of undergraduate education. In 1979, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, together with the Postgraduate Education and Doctoral Committee that had been formed earlier, proposed and developed the Postgraduate Program – which later became the embryo for the Postgraduate Program at Padjadjaran University that has evolved to the present day.

The Postgraduate and Doctoral Education Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Satari, with the Sub-Committee for the Postgraduate Program chaired by Dr. Ir. Husen Djajasukanta, M.Sc., and the Sub-Committee for the Doctoral Program chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Satari. At that time, Padjadjaran University was one of the nine universities offering Postgraduate Programs.

At its founding on July 23, 1979, the Postgraduate Program initially had one Master’s Study Program (Plant Science Study Program) and one Doctoral Program (Agricultural Science Study Program). The implementation and management of the Postgraduate Program were carried out in and by the Faculty of Agriculture. Currently, the Postgraduate Program at Padjadjaran University has a total of 24 Master’s Programs (including Plant Science Study Program, Soil Science Study Program, and Agricultural Economics Study Program) and 10 Doctoral Programs (including Agricultural Science Study Program).

In 1983, the Postgraduate Program underwent a fundamental transformation into the Postgraduate Faculty of Padjadjaran University, with management no longer conducted by the Faculty of Agriculture. The Dean of the Postgraduate Faculty at that time was Dr. Ir. Husen Djajasukanta, M.Sc., assisted by an Assistant Dean, Dr. Ir. Didin Suwandi Satiaatmadja. Based on the Decision of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0311/0/1991, the management of the Postgraduate Program (Master’s and Doctoral Programs) was led by the Director of the Postgraduate Program, who was accountable to the Rector. Starting from the academic year 2008/2009, the management of the Master’s Programs (Plant Science Study Program, Soil Science Study Program, and Agricultural Economics Study Program) and the Doctoral Program (Agricultural Science Study Program) has gradually been undertaken by the Faculty of Agriculture at Padjadjaran University.

The Faculty of Agriculture at Padjadjaran University also developed various vocational programs in response to the need for agricultural experts. These programs are:

  1. Diploma Program S0-1 Integrated Project Field Officer (Petugas Lapangan Proyek Terpadu – PLPT) for Plantation. The program has been running since the academic year 1981/1982, under the leadership of Director Prof. Dr. Ir. Syamsudin Djakamihardja, M.Sc. The program’s objective is to prepare experts with knowledge and skills as field implementers for plantation projects.

  2. Diploma Program S0-1 Plant Protection Officer. The program activities started in the academic year 1983/1984 with Dr. Ir. Sadeli Natasasmita as the Chairperson. The educational objective is to train skilled technical personnel in the field of plant protection.

  3. Diploma I (S0-1) Agricultural Vocational Teacher Education in Agricultural Product Technology. This program has been conducted since the academic year 1983/1984, with Dr. Ir. Giat Suryatmana, M.Sc., as the Chairperson. The program aims to educate agricultural teachers in the field of agricultural product technology, who are skilled and capable of educating medium-level technicians to handle post-harvest agricultural issues.

  4. Diploma Program S0-3 Agricultural and Fisheries Vocational Teacher Education. The program started in the academic year 1984/1985, with Dr. Ir. Aos M. Akyas as the Head of the Crop Cultivation Program and Ir. Suryadi, M.S., as the Head of the Fisheries Program. The program’s objective is to educate agricultural teachers in the fields of crop cultivation and fisheries, who are skilled and capable of training technicians to handle crop cultivation and fisheries activities.

  5. Polytechnic Education Development Center for Agriculture (Pusat Pengembangan Pendidikan Politeknik Pertanian – PEDCA). This program is a collaboration between the Directorate General of Higher Education and the Asian Development Bank, aimed at serving the needs of lecturers/instructors, curriculum devices, and other requirements related to the establishment of six agricultural polytechnics throughout Indonesia. The program began in 1984, with the first Director being Dr. Ir. Saifuddin Sarief.

  6. Diploma III Agribusiness Program. The program was initiated in the academic year 1993/1994, offering seven Study Programs: Agribusiness, Horticultural Crop Cultivation, Agricultural Technology, Aquaculture Technology, Integrated Pest Management, Fisheries Cultivation, and Forestry. The program’s objective is to produce skilled and professional individuals in each field of study who are ready to work independently and can fill the workforce gap at the upper-middle level. In the academic year 1993/1994, the Diploma III Program at the Faculty of Agriculture was led by Dr. Ir. Aos M. Akyas as the Program Chair. However, since 2008, the Faculty of Agriculture has closed both the Extension Program and Diploma III.
