Ichigo Oishi - Smile Everywhere: Successfully Make the Land at Faperta Unpad More Colorful

Development of Mother Plants for Japanese Strawberry Seedlings in collaboration with Japan Premium Vegetable (JPV) since 2022 has resulted in premium strawberries harvested from a controlled greenhouse in Jatinangor. It was previously unexpected that sweet strawberries could still be produced from two-year-old plants. Nevertheless, the Unpad strawberry team, under the coordination of Prof. Reginawanti Hindersah, agreed with the CEO of JPV, Mr. Kenji Endo, to begin developing seedlings from runners. This agreement was approved by the seed producer in Japan for a certain number of seedlings.

High-quality seedlings that meet the requirements for strawberry cultivation are obtained from mother plants produced through appropriate technology. For the past six months, Unpad and JPV have been developing five varieties of Japanese strawberry mother plants at Bale Tananen. The mother plant production technology is adopted from JPV with the support of a nursery and cooling facilities that ensure seedling quality.

Currently, dozens of seedlings fromrunnerhave been obtained from the strawberry mother plants and will be planted to replace the older plants. This plant replacement will better ensure the productivity and quality of the premium strawberries produced by Unpad with the support of Japan Premium Vegetable. Thus, strawberry-loving consumers will continue to enjoy the sweetness and aroma of Unpad-JPV strawberries for years to come.

Through its collaboration with Japan Premium Vegetable (JPV), the development of Japanese strawberry seedlings at Unpad directly supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This project applies an efficient and sustainable production approach by leveraging advanced technology to produce high-quality seedlings from existing mother plants, including those that are two years old. This reduces dependence on imports and minimizes resource waste. Furthermore, by continuously producing premium, high-quality strawberries locally, the project encourages consumers to choose agricultural products that are cultivated responsibly and sustainably, aligning with SDG 12's goal of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Our motto to always work hard and produce premium strawberries is: "Ichigo Oishii - Smile from Anywhere".
