From Maggots to Hydroponics, Agradarma Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) Champions Sustainable Farming

Students of the Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran, have successfully carried out the Agradarma Bhakti Tani 2025 community service program over 37 days. In collaboration with local partners, the initiative focused on empowering farmers in Ciheulang Village and Jelekong Sub-district, Bandung Regency, by providing practical solutions to pressing agricultural challenges. The program featured innovative approaches such as maggot cultivation to process organic waste while generating new income opportunities, and hydroponic techniques designed for land-scarce areas. Students also developed crop calendars and introduced eco-friendly pest management methods, including the installation of nets and refugia, to enhance sustainable farm productivity.

Addressing one of the farmers’ toughest challenges, rodent infestation, the team introduced the Rumah Burung Hantu (RUBUHA) program, which leverages barn owls as a natural and environmentally friendly control method. To boost farmers’ competitiveness, students also supported women’s farming groups in transitioning to digital marketing platforms, shifting away from traditional sales systems. Meanwhile, unused land was transformed into family medicinal gardens (TOGA), adding both economic and health value to local communities. Through this comprehensive approach, Agradarma not only delivered technical solutions but also instilled long-term sustainable skills that can serve as a foundation for future agricultural progress and inspiration for other regions across Indonesia.

The program strongly contributes to SDG 15 Life on Land , with initiatives like refugia and RUBUHA reflecting Unpad’s commitment to conserving terrestrial ecosystems while empowering rural communities through sustainable agricultural innovation. In line with tagline Universitas Padjadjaran’s vision of being Excellent, Inclusive, and Impactful, Agradarma represents a tangible example of student-driven efforts to advance a more resilient and competitive farming sector.
