Jatinangor, June 5, 2026 \u2014 The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran, through its Research and Community Service Information System (BIMA) Program, continues to promote the development of locally driven agricultural commodities through innovative research initiatives. One of the ongoing studies focuses on accelerating Liberica coffee production in West Java, led by Yudithia Maxiselly, S.P., M.P., Ph.D., a lecturer in the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. The research aims to explore the potential, characteristics, and cultivation strategies of Liberica coffee, a promising yet underutilized coffee species in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Yudithia, the study builds upon a broader series of coffee-related research projects that initially examined three major coffee species: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. As the research progressed, Liberica emerged as a particularly intriguing species due to its unique characteristics and untapped potential. The initiative was also motivated by the realization that, despite its long history and presence across several regions of West Java, Liberica coffee remains relatively unknown and underdeveloped. \u201cLiberica is still far less recognized than Arabica and Robusta, even though it possesses numerous advantages in terms of environmental adaptability and productivity,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research began with extensive field exploration and mapping of Liberica coffee distribution across West Java. The research team conducted surveys in several regions, including Sumedang, Kuningan, Sukabumi, Bogor, Bandung, and surrounding areas, to identify populations of Liberica coffee that had received little scientific documentation. The survey revealed that Liberica coffee is distributed across multiple locations, with many trees dating back to the colonial era. Despite their historical significance, these coffee populations have not been optimally utilized by local communities. The findings highlight new opportunities for developing an alternative coffee commodity with distinctive characteristics and considerable economic potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond mapping its distribution, the study also investigates the morphological characteristics of Liberica coffee to improve the identification of different types found in the field. Particular attention is given to distinguishing Liberica from Excelsa, two coffee groups that are often considered identical. Preliminary observations indicate clear morphological differences in plant architecture and fruit characteristics, suggesting valuable opportunities for future varietal development and genetic conservation efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a quality perspective, the research focuses on analyzing nutritional and phytochemical components, including caffeine, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds that contribute to coffee quality. These analyses are complemented by evaluations of cultivation and post-harvest practices to better understand the factors influencing the quality of Liberica coffee beans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yudithia noted that Liberica coffee possesses several agronomic advantages that make it an attractive crop for future development. The species adapts well to low- and medium-altitude environments, demonstrates relatively strong resistance to diseases, has a long productive lifespan, and is capable of producing high yields. In addition, Liberica beans are significantly larger than those of Arabica and Robusta, and the plants are capable of bearing fruit almost year-round. \u201cLiberica can serve as an alternative option for farmers in areas that are less suitable for Arabica cultivation. Its relatively stable production throughout the year also offers an additional source of income for farming communities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its commitment to sustainable agricultural intensification, the research team is also developing cultivation innovations through the utilization of coffee waste as an organic resource. Coffee husks and leaves are processed into both solid and liquid organic fertilizers and then reintroduced into coffee production systems. This approach not only aims to improve plant growth but also addresses the issue of waste accumulation, one of the persistent challenges in the coffee industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research findings indicate that organic amendments derived from coffee waste have generated positive growth responses in both Liberica and Excelsa coffee plants. The use of coffee waste as fertilizer not only enhances plant development but also represents a practical strategy for creating a more efficient and environmentally responsible cultivation system through the application of circular economy principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project involves a multidisciplinary collaboration among researchers from the Faculty of Agriculture at Unpad, scientists from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), international partners, and undergraduate and graduate students. This collaborative framework strengthens the research from multiple perspectives, ranging from cultivation practices and plant metabolite analysis to the future commercial development of Liberica coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To date, the research has produced scientific publications on the distribution mapping of Liberica coffee in West Java and generated several important findings related to production acceleration. Through the cultivation technologies being developed, Liberica coffee plants that typically begin bearing fruit at approximately 3.5 years of age have shown the potential to start producing as early as 2.5 years. This achievement demonstrates the promise of Liberica as a plantation commodity capable of providing earlier economic returns to farmers while maintaining long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, the researchers hope that the outcomes of this study will extend beyond academic publications and deliver tangible benefits to farmers and coffee entrepreneurs. In addition to supporting the diversification of Indonesia\u2019s coffee sector, the development of Liberica coffee has the potential to generate value-added products, strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian coffee, and contribute to the growth of a more resilient plantation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This research also contributes to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through the promotion of sustainable agricultural productivity, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the utilization of coffee waste within a circular cultivation system, SDG 13 (Climate Action) through environmentally friendly farming practices, and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through efforts to conserve and develop local coffee genetic resources. Through the advancement of Liberica coffee, the research seeks to foster a more sustainable plantation sector while generating long-term economic benefits for farmers and local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
